June 30
The Bar
As you can see from the picture – crouching under the bar is a requirement for the S@S library staff. I must go under the bar at least 40 times a day. I need to count some time
Man overboard drill
They dumped a dummy over and made a sharp “Williamson" turn to get it. Ship hasn’t rolled so much since the bad Sunday. They successfully rescued the dummy.
Green Flash
Well, more of a “slight shift in color to avocado” I’d say. We saw it last night for the first time. Or, I think we did. Darian, the physicist says we did. Horizon must be very clear – no clouds. Very nice sunset at least.
Cataloging
I’ve gotten most of the books that were waiting for cataloging cataloged. I’ve decided not to add a number of them that were sitting around. We have about 10 boxes of old text books that we need to get off the ship. I hope we can give some to people in countries who need them. I understand there are customs problems if we tried to take big boxes of books off the ship. We evidently ask people in faculty lead field experiences to schools, orphanages to take one or two books each to be given to the children when they get to the school.

We skipped Wednesday, June 28. Very odd. The really odd thing is that this feels like Thursday, and yesterday felt like Tuesday!
Sleep
I’ve been sleeping great. At the Baring Sea social in the Fac/Staff Lounge we were talking about how vivid our dreams are, and how much we remember them. Also, about the gentle rocking of the ship and how wonderful and comforting it feels. Not so much womb-like (to me) as a feeling of something like the earth breathing. I know, I know – way too pantheistic or philosophical. But, that’s how it feels to me – like deep, long breaths.
Library security
I haven’t been attempting to ’lock’ down the Library at night. I had thought at the beginning of the voyage I’d try to find rope and do some sailor knots to tie off the library, but I decided not to do that. We put out a clip board at night that says the Library is closed, and has spaces for people to write down their shipboard ID and the barcode of any book they want from the General Collection. Several folks have used this. We do put down the reserve blinds (former liquor cabinet) at night. They are so difficult to open that I think that’s enough security for the reserves.
450 people
That’s about how many passengers we have – students, faculty, staff, adult passengers. The ship when completely full can hold about 900 passengers. The Spring 2006 voyage had about 680 students (assume a total of around 780 with fac/staff/adults). Can’t imagine. It feels full, yet not too full right now. There are lots of public spaces, and both dining rooms would be open when the ship is fuller. But, we all agree that this is very nice. Of course, we realize it’s not so nice for ISE. It would, I’m sure, be fantastic with more folks, but I’m happy with our group.

I finally caught the S@S Wave video on the monitor that plays DVDs of recent voyages. Quite an adventure. As I understand it only 2 people left the ship when it docked in Hawaii. Definitely a testament to how quickly the group on board forms a community and a bond.

Could have it if I wanted it. Not really tempted to go to my cabin and read there. I read in the Fac/Staff Lounge or on the deck. Never take a book to meals. If you know me, you know that I always take a book to meals. But, on board it just seems that most of us would rather talk with people and meet new people at meals. Don’t sit with anyone who is studying, but otherwise everyone can and does sit with everyone else at meals. Great way to meet people you haven’t met yet.

Went to “Dancing through the Decades” last night. I think they finished playing “my” decades before I got there. Several of us watched the students take each other photos for a while, and then we gracefully retreated to our section of the ship. The students definitely were having a good time. I have to say, that for all I’d heard about the drinking issues over the years, I didn’t see anyone who seemed to be drinking too quickly. They basically just looked like they were at a party.
Up early
Most days I’m up by 5am. I’m actually exercising in the morning! Not usually a good time for me.
International date line
We passed the line at 10:47 this morning. Tonight instead of setting our clocks back an hour tonight we set them forward a day. Tomorrow it will be Thursday! We skip Wednesday. I still don’t really understand this…. I get it intellectually, but it just seems very odd.
Crew
The crew on the ship is amazing. They seem to know all our names. Antoinette (in the Faculty/Staff Lounge) has everyone’s account number memorized – not just mine! They do a great job and are unfailingly nice to us. They keep the ship immaculate.
Pampering
A massage this afternoon. Not as good as Carol, but pretty darned good.
Taiwan
ISE brought a Taiwanese student on board for the leg from Hawaii to Taiwan. I talked with him tonight. Good guy. He had to “try out” for the job. He’s very personable, and happy to talk about Taiwan and ask questions about American opinions and people. He’s very up on the news and on American politics. Good choice on ISE’s part.
I have no idea what I’m going to do in Taiwan. I know I am trip leader for the second section of the overnight white-water rafting trip! Should be interesting. I ate dinner with two students who are going on the first section. Wish they were in my group. Good guys. I plan on having the students do the “buddy system,” and on asking who’s either rafted before or is a lifeguard. It will be fine AND fun.
Videos
Discovered an entire video cabinet I didn’t know was there. Good, we have more videos that we thought we did. Also, found a couple files about the videos – one of the documentaries and one of the feature films. Both annotated. What I haven’t found is the list that was made in the Fall 2005. We’re retyping that. I’ll send it to Erika when we’re done. I’ll also send the two files I found today.

Not much going on today. BBQ lunch on the pool deck. Hadn’t really been out there during the day. Pretty crowded with lovely young things. I sunned later in the day. My first time. REALLY nice. Could definitely get addicting.
Phantom barcodes
Finally figured out a system for deleting the phantom barcodes. Going fairly quickly. May leave the actual shelf check for Erika and her students in the fall. By that time the catalog should more or less accruately reflect what’s on the shelves. So, shelf reading shouldn’t be too bad.

Erika – I think this is a dance they hold every voyage so you might want to be prepared. I just have some black stuff....

June 24 – evening
The deans are holding a series of small receptions in their (nice) rooms. I got to go last night. Very pleasant. Good to talk to a smaller group of both faculty and staff.
Library
First night my students worked. I checked in at 9pm. All was well. Nice not to have to work until 10pm or 11pm.
June 25 (Sunday)
Regular class day. Jing Jing thanked UVA Library at the beginning of her lecture in Global Studies. The Library did a great job getting her images and videos for her lectures.
Phantom barcodes in Winnebago
In the middle of the night last night I realized (I thought) where all the extra barcodes in Winnebago came from. There are at least 2 barcodes for EVERY title in the system. I’d estimate that we only really have 2 copies of maybe 50 titles. The rest are phantom. I figured out that I had created these phantoms because I must NOT have deleted the database before I reloaded it from the CD I had. AGH!!!!!!!!!!
Turns out it wasn’t me. I’m pretty sure this did happen, and I’m pretty sure I know when it happened. And, it wasn’t in June 2006. That’s as much as I’ll say.
Anyway, now that we know which barcode is almost ALWAYS the one to delete our inventory project will move along more quickly. It’s going quickly anyway. We should be able to accomplish a complete inventory this summer.
I experimented with the batch process mode of Winnebago. I had several conditions set up so that the phantom barcodes would be deleted and not the real ones. BUT, the batch process will ONLY delete entire bib records NOT single barcodes. MAJOR BUMMER. I was so proud I'd figured out how to identify the ones to delete. Oh well....
UVA databases
Access to the UVA databases is actually reasonably fast. Not like on land, but not that bad.

June 23 (written June 24)
Hawaii
Many of us got up around 5am to see the pilot come aboard to steer us into Honolulu Harbor. Beautiful sunrise. Lots of folks on deck on cell phones. Most seemed to work, including mine! Talked to my parents, brother, and Don (twice). Really nice to let them know what's going on.
I was trip leader for a half day tour - Diamond Head (actually a volcanic crater - we went inside), Punchbowl (another in tact crater with a national cemetery inside), and several lookouts and points on interest. A high point - the "From Here to Eternity" beach. Most of the students had no idea what that meant, the adult passengers knew though.
Several folks left the bus in Wikiki. I didn't, and so, discovered another, much less crowded beach called Ala Monana. I spent most of the afternoon there. Very nice. The Pacific is evidently more salty than the Atlantic. You float without moving a muscle. Just lie back and you float. Not quite the sit upright and read a book like the Great Salt Lake, but practically.
UVA Libraries came through in a BIG way. They overnighted about 20 books to go on reserve. They also sent about 6 videos. AND, a CD of images for one of the professors. It was GREAT. Very impressive. Thanks to Jean and Erika.
Daivd Gies joined the ship. He'll be the Academic Dean next summer. He'll be with us until Taiwan.

June 22 (Thursday)
Smooth seas, and warm temps. Flying fish - which turn out to be small. I, somehow, had thought of them as large. They are about the size of robins. They pop out of the water, fly about a foot above it for about 25 yards (quite a ways), and pop back into the water.
Should see Hawaii before dark, I think. Land at Oahu around 5am as I understand it. I lead a half trip in the morning. Hope to get a box of books for reserve from UVA. Hope to go to the beach in the afternoon!
Cataloging
We're manually inventorying the library. The automated inventory that's been run for each voyage doesn't really seem to have worked very well. The catalog says we have MANY books that we don't actually have. We are printing out a shelf list (sort of - computer ordered - the librarians will know what that means - 1, 11, 111, 2, 22, 222, etc. rather than in true shelf order). Anyway, we are checking the shelves. I plan to delete the materials not found. I will bring back the print outs, so we can order any titles we feel should be replaced.

I shouldn't forget to mention my mess ups. I asked Arifeen for a brief time in Global Studies to talk about the Library and the UVA Databases access (which seems problematic at this point). He kindly put me on Monday (June 19). I read the schedule wrong and wasn't ready yesterday. OOPS!!!! Anyway, he's making time for me today. AGH!!! I hadn't realised that Sunday counted as the first day of GS. I was on for the 2nd day and thought that meant today. He had the date on the schedule, but I've pretty much forgotten the date already!

Oh boy, do I feel better today. Yesterday the sea didn't look that rough, but it felt it. Plus, the first day on board, so not used to it at all. I didn't really feel sick, but had the unrational fear the ship was going to tip over every time it rolled. (I hate airplane turbulance too.) Anyway, much better today.
Reserve books
Pretty much have all the reserve books for the classes on the Reserve shelves. Unfortunately, a number of them aren't here. When Brad checked the catalog it SAID they were here, but the catalog really isn't very accurate. So, ERIKA - you need to email me and have me check the shelves for any books requested for the Fall. Don't trust the catalog at this point. Please call the message something like "Reserve book request."

Got most high priority new books into the catalog today. OCLC Connexion worked well yesterday. Less well today. Lots of steps to getting books into the catalog. I'll try really hard to document all of this this summer. Printing labels is a bit of a pain, but mostly works.

Pretty busy. One faculty member is using ArtStor right now. Big question is "can we rent your DVDs?" Answer - No. They are for faculty and programing of the 4 TV channels on the ship. I've reorganized the VHS and DVD cabinets so that the DVDs are in the top drawer of the lockable cabinet. The VHS tapes overflow onto open shelves, but since no one has VHS players on board they don't seem in danger of "walking."

June 18, 0600
OK, this business about "the ship's really big, and you won't feel much motion" -- NOT true. I feel the motion. Especially, last night in bed before, I think, they stopped to put out (put down?) the stablilzers. I'm sitting at the very forward part of the ship right now (Faculty Staff Lounge). Very nice view, and definitely moving! I'm very glad I've got on the wrist bands.
Today's the first full day for all the students. They were an excited bunch last night. Todaya they talk to the faculty and decide what classes they will ultimatly take. They've preregistered, but have one drop/add day.
Our departure from S.D. yesterday was very smooth. I waw a pod of dolphins run along side, and swim under the bow. Probably 30 of them - jumping and diving. What a wonderful site. I'm hoping for a whale, but none yet.

June 16 (Friday)
A note about email. I had copied my alias file onto my laptop (or, rather, Rich had). Anyway, that's gone with a Eudora problem I had. So, I don't have anyone's email address. I've sent my spam filter REAL high, so I hope not to get too much of that. I'd love to get a note from friends with their email address. But, basicaly, this (boring, as Don says) blog will be my communication for the next 2 months.
Met with student workers early. Kristen, Katie, YY, and Ana all seem very smart, and will be great. I know I keep saying it, but worked hard, got lots done.
A couple of things to Erika and others - bring long sleeved tees, and sweatshirts. The ship gets COLD. While we on the seas I'm guessing my shorts won't get worn much.
The ducking under the "bar" is getting a bit old already. I think I have a fairly graceful technique. Anyway, you might want to start practicing.
I really hope I can get a lot more procedures documented so you won't have to recreate the wheel. With Brad here, it's been fairly easy to pick up on things, but we had to figure out a bit on our own. The IT guy, Chris, for the summer is going to be GREAT. He's already helped me a bunch. (I've helped him a bit too, since I was on earlier than he, I got him up on a few things.)
Parent's reception and Captain's dinner on Friday night. The Parent's reception was enjoyable. I talked to a number of parents who pretty much all said they'd be figuring out how to sail as adult passengers at some point. Also, met a parent who went to school with one of my doctor's in C'ville.
I'm SO glad that Diane asked me to attend the Captain's dinner. Very nice. If I remember correctly - 6 or 7 courses. Quite swank. I sat with the Staff Captain - 2nd in command of ship. Mary T.(??) who sailed as a Chapman College student introduced herself to me. She was a librarian and helped ISE automate the onboard library. We also figured out that she knows Garth (who was at Chapman at the same time as she was). Couple of "small world" things in one day. Bet I'll have more....

Morning meeting about the Global Studies class. I will be doing a very short presentation at an early class about the online access to UVA resources.
Many UVA folks around. Dudley arrived. John Casteen toured the ship in the afternoon.

Jean got the UVA Libraries SAS web page up in time for me to do a quick and dirty PowerPoint about access to the UVA academic sites for the faculty at our morning meeting. Very happy to show them what the page looks like.
Brad and I got lots of books cataloged today. Erin will freak out when she comes to the ship - there are a lot of "cataloging challenges" shall we say....
Had a very nice dinner in the HillCrest neighborhood with friends (Melissa and Tim) who've just recently moved to San Diego. Really fun to catch up and see a different part of S.D.

The records loaded on my laptop finally. It looks like the server part of the client/server library catalog software needs to be reloaded on the ship's server. UVA will send the CD with the software to load.
A very good development - the ship's IT guy and I discussed getting free access to the UVA databases. We talked about the required proxy access and about the stem UVA URLs that would need to be free. He worked some magic and made the two UVA URLs of www.lib.virginia.edu and www.mail.virginia.edu free to the ship. And, he worked out a way that once anyone is asked for, and logs on with their proxy ID that database and other proxied databases are free to them. If they then type a non-UVA non-proxied non-free URL in they are asked for their ship's intranet ID. At that point all their internet access is charged for - the URL they typed AND any other URLs they go do - EVEN the "free" sites. They MUST NOT be logged into the ship's intranet in order to get the free access. This is exactly the way the other "free" sites work.
Evening - Took the ferry to Coronado Island. Walked to "The Del" (Hotel del Coronado) and had a dinner. What a beautiful place - www.hoteldel.com/gallery

I began to annotate the free sites on ship. Currently they are just a list of URLs. I wanted to give a bit of info about each. Sal said that the actual list couldn't be annotated - the internet provider doesn't have that capability. So, I thought that it might work for UVA Library to make a page which could explain the free access, have annotations, and link to the free sites. Sent this back to Erin, and they are working on it.
Faculty arrived. Orientation meeting. Many of them stopped by the Library first thing to check on their reserves and books. They seem really good. Had dinner with the doctor (Renee) and nurse (Ellen)- lots of fun. Renee has done S@S before so she gave us good advice.

Got to San Diego around noon. Got on the ship around 2pm. No problems at all. Others had to wait until the port security folks got the proper list with their names on it. I didn't have that trouble.

First full day on the ship. I began the day in the Administrative Team's training. A very good group. They will be great leaders and organizers for the voyage. Brad and I are organizing the Library. I'm very glad he's here to help me figure all this out. We needed to recreate the catalog from the bib records I brought on a CD from UVA. Taking a LONG time to load on my laptop.
